Liquid Strength

The fun thing about Liquid Strength at Equinox is that it requires mind and body to complete the class, so there’s no mindless reps and careless squats. You must truly be present to get the most of the moves, which are inspired by multiple disciplines including: sports, dance and martial arts.

Created by Story von Holzhausen, Liquid Strength draws upon your imagination as much as your muscles to create resistance and maintain proper form. The class is done barefoot to allow you to be grounded without relying on shoes for support. The movements (done both with and without handweights) are continuous and are done much slower than traditional classes, though the rhythm changes frequently.

As the website (Liquidstrength.com) states the classes, while “strenuous, the smoothness and fluidity of the class is meditative and calming.” von Holzhausen’s teaching method is very approachable and she is blunt about your postures and how hard the class is everyone—including herself. In one class I took, she said, while shaking to hold a posture: “I hate this because it hurts so much, but it hurts in a way that I love.” And it’s clear that while one can master the range of motion, the moves themselves will never get easy as they constantly challenge you to move at all angles and use muscles that common linear workouts ignore. I was sore for four days after the class. It hurt so much in a way that I love that I’m making it a regular part of my gym routine.
