NYC Campfire Chef Wins Classic
You don’t have to live like
Grizzly Adams to know how to cook delicious food over a campfire, and New
Yorker Melissa Mullins is proof of that.
Mullins took home the grand prize and title of “America’s
Best Campfire Chef” in Redwood Creek Wine’s Campfire Classic cook-off in June,
where outdoor chefs from across the country competed with their homespun
recipes in Riverside Park, Manhattan. A panel of experts, including Food Network
chef Bob Blumer, awarded Mullins the $10,000 prize as well as a donation of
making a donation of $5,000 on her behalf to the Appalachian National Scenic
Trail Mullins chose the Appalachian Trail, which runs from Maine to Georgia, as
her national park donation because of its rich history and lush beauty.
Mullins’ Blackberry handpies come at the perfect time as blackberries are at
their best in August, look for them at farmer’s markets and make them from the
recipe on our website at Metrosportsny.com
Outdoor Cooking Tip from the Chef:
To make sure that all her ingredients stay fresh while
cooking outdoors, Melissa always packs in plastic bags that stay sealed and
makes sure to prep and measure out everything before hand to be easily
transported.
