Kayakers and canoers in New York City have a new resource to help them paddle safely and confidently in the city’s many waterways: an official map and guide.
The New York City Water Trail connects 160 square miles of rivers, bays, creeks, inlets and ocean in the five boroughs suitable for kayaks, canoes and open-water rowing craft. The map and guide identify the 28 safe, legal launch points throughout the city, inform readers of educational, recreational and scenic opportunities, and provide information about the local paddling community.
The map and guide is the result of a team effort between a non-profit educational group called Going Coastal, the canoe and kayak communities, and Queens Borough Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski. Volunteers accompanied Lewandowski as she traveled and documented each leg of the water trail.
“As an avid kayaker, I am delighted that the opportunities for kayaking right in my own backyard are expanding,” says Lewandowski.
