From the Editor: Winter is for Athletes

Everyone talks about this time of year as a slowing down, an end to a season or a tough time to get workouts in because of all the holiday planning and travel. I like to see it as having more potential for fun, interesting cross-training workouts.

The off-season is a time for taking risks with your daily routine. Maybe go try a new workout, a bootcamp or something way off the beaten path like a dance class. Workouts can be found in the strangest places, it’s up to you to find them. Actually I like to think it’s up to us to find them for you and tell you about them, then it’s just up to you to get out there and do them.

The winter season can be a great time indoors as well as out. Sure all you skiers and snowboarders have an easy choice, if we get hit hard with the white stuff this year (and I have a good feeling that we will) then heading outside for the thrill of the downhill is an obvious way to spend the day. But what about the less incline inclined? Cross -country skiing, snowshoeing and winter running are all great options.

Whatever you do don’t downplay the indoors and all the great activities you can do in shorts and a T-shirt throughout the winter.  We’ve got some great workouts in this issue along with out ski resort roundup to make sure that everyone can see the silver lining in those grey, snowy clouds.

I’m not trying to be pushy about winter workouts, no one understands how great winter can be for recovery, rest and relaxation more than me. (Those things are, after all, some of my greatest talents.) We’ve got a great recovery story to help you make the most of the winter for the flip side as well. Be sure to take note of the tips and give yourself the proper rest this off-season so you can get back into it in the spring a stronger and faster and more-prepared athlete.

Whatever your winter pursuits, whatever adventure you have or mountain you ski, be safe and when you take risks, make sure they’re smart ones. And get ready for our great Best Of issue in December. We’d love to get your votes, so drop us a line and tell us about your favorite gym, trainer, post-run coffee spot or anything else that you love. You never know, someone else might just love it too.
