From the Editor: Bring on Autumn
October might just be my favorite month.
As many of you know, I am not a fan of the heat and have thus been a total slacker when it comes to running this summer. I just can’t do it. Heat is my worst enemy. It’s always been that I will be in my best shape in the winter months and then I turn into sloth once summer arrives. So now that I can feel the change in the air and I pull out my sweaters and fall-weight running tights I am giddy with anticipation about the fall running season that is upon us. The New York marathon is the apex of that season when the whole city begins to buzz with energy. Who doesn’t love to find a perfect spot along the course (whether that’s the crowded bridge in Manhattan or your own personal street corner at mile 9 in Brooklyn) and cheer on all those runners? It’s an event like no other in the city and we can all get behind that kind of energy to help usher in autumn. We’ve got some great marathon stories for you this year, and resident running expert Toby Tanser has a pretty hilarious story to help locals and tourists alike learn a little bit more about the city as they run.
On a separate note, it seems that we hit a chord with people last month with our “Better Safe than Sorry” editorials. I am thrilled to see the community rally around a topic like this as it affects each of us individually as well as the community as a whole. The letters we’re running here are interesting because they show two sides of the argument over charity racing and preparedness. Charity racing is more popular than ever before and as we near the holiday season (it’s coming on like a freight train) people are more inclined to do races that donate proceeds to local charities, or to raise money for a much larger foundation through fundraising efforts. Having an open debate about preparedness will only make all of us think a little harder about it and thus be more prepared. So be sure to read what your fellow readers have to say below.
