Better Safe Than Sorry

In July we saw two tragedies in our area during triathlons only one week apart. First there was the death of a 32-year-old man in the New York City Triathlon on July 20. The following week 52-year-old John Hobgood of Princeton Junction, N.J., died in the New Jersey State Triathlon.

American Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein will be one of 10,000 athletes pounding the streets of the Big Apple for the New York City Half-Marathon presented by Nike.  For the two-time Olympian who is preparing for the 2008 Beijing Games, the July 27 race is his final training event.

“The Half should serve as an excellent final test, in terms of both the elite field and weather conditions, before the Olympic Games marathon in Beijing,” said Ritzenhein.

He, along with a star-studded cast of athletes like USA Half-Marathon athlete champion James Carney, four-time Olympian Coleen De Reuck, fourth-place finisher for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Zoila Gomez and Fasil Bizuneh, will challenge each other for the competitive prize purse of $70,000.  A $10,000 purse is offered to the top male and female athlete.

The two men challenging Ritzenhein for the purse came off of great runs in the 10,000m final at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track &Field in Eugene, July 4.  Carney placed sixth and Bizuneh placed fifteenth.  Ritzenhein actually participated in the race, so he could prepare for the Beijing Games.  He placed eighth.  He received his berth to the Beijing by placing second at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials last November.

For Ritzenhein, 25, of Eugene, Ore., the past five months have been injury–laden, and he only began serious training in June for the Beijing Games.  Because of his foot injury he withdrew from two training races this year.

As Ritzenhein looks forward to Beijing, his competitors have a chance to prove themselves.  Bizuneh, 28, of Flagstaff, Ariz., has yet to score a win in a large race, usually placing in the top five.  Carney, 30, of Boulder, Colo., on the other hand has had momentum the past year, winning the USA Half-Marathon in January.

The women also have to prove themselves as De Reuck, 44, of Boulder, Colo., could not compete in the Olympic Team Trials because of injury.  Gomez, 29, of Alamosa, Colo., also had grievances in the Olympic trials.  She missed the Olympic squad by one place, finishing fourth.

Over 19,000 people applied to be part of the popular course that winds around Central Park, Times Square, 42nd Street and the financial district.
